How To Shop For Animal Friendly Bath Gel

Sometimes, you don’t have a choice when it comes to what soaps or bath gels you get to use due to financial constraints or health reasons.  In those cases, you have very few toiletries that are available to you.  But if you do have the money and health to choose from nearly any toiletry, wouldn't it feel better to know that no animals were harmed in the making of your bath gel?

Think Cruelty Free

When you hear terms like "cruelty free" or "animal friendly" test gels, it means that no animals were used in the testing or quality assurance testing of your bath gel.  Until a few years ago, millions of animals were tortured and (mercifully) killed in order to test cosmetics and toiletries (NOT medicines).  Many companies like Mary Kay and The Body Shop are considered as making cruelty free bath gels.

It can be difficult to police all cosmetic and toiletry companies to be sure they do everything that their bottles say they do.  No everything that says "No animals tested" means what they say it means.  There is, thankfully, a product watchdog that specializes in checking companies to see if they test on animals or not.  They are called The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics.

Their logo is pretty distinctive – a leaping bunny.  Only those products like bath gels that have been approved by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics are legally allowed to carry the leaping bunny logo.  If you are like me and have dodgy eyesight, it's hard to see that logo.  What you can do is ask the Coalition to send you a free list of cruelty-free companies.  You could also check out their website at www.leapingbunny.org. 

It Makes A Difference

Buying cruelty-free products like bath gel is a big way to send a message to all cosmetic companies that making animals suffer for no good reason will no longer be tolerated.  No company would make any product that no one will buy.  Often, you also find cruelty free products are a little more intense than ordinary products.  So, you don’t need to use as much to get the same cleansing benefits.

Sometimes buying cruelty-free products like bath gel costs a little more, initially.  But you do save in the long run.  And not only will you save some money, you will also save a lot of animals from suffering and death.
